NFDC-NMIC and the Consulate General of Argentina Celebrate the Spirit of Tango Through Film and Cultural Exchange

The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC), under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Argentina, hosted a special cultural evening titled “Celebrating the Spirit of Tango” in Mumbai.
The event spotlighted Tango Malhar, a Marathi feature film that reflects the artistic synergy between Indian and Argentinian cultural traditions. The evening commenced with a live Tango performance by Mr. Manish Dharmani, writer of the film, and Ms. Saya Date, the film’s director. This stirring act beautifully set the tone for a night that blended the emotional intensity of Tango with the narrative richness of Indian cinema.
An engaging panel discussion followed, featuring Ms. Saya Date and Mr. Daniel Quer Confalonieri, Consul General of Argentina, moderated by Ms. Jayita Ghosh, Marketing Head, NMIC. The discussion touched upon the role of cinema and dance as instruments of soft power diplomacy, the inspiration behind cross-cultural storytelling, and how Tango became the soul of an Indian regional narrative.
The audience was then treated to a special screening of the film Tango Malhar, a cinematic ode to the cultural confluence of India and Argentina. The highlight came when a Marathi song merged with Tango rhythms, drawing enthusiastic applause from a full house.
A Q&A session with the cast and crew followed the screening, expressing admiration for the film’s originality and cross-cultural vision. Dignitaries in attendance included the Consul Generals of Japan, Finland, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, reflecting broad support for international cultural dialogue through cinema.
In his address, Mr. Daniel Quer Confalonieri, Consul General of Argentina, stated:
“Tango is a cherished symbol of Argentina’s soul. Seeing it interpreted through Indian storytelling is deeply meaningful. Collaborations like this transcend borders.”
Closing the evening, Ms. Jayita Ghosh, Marketing Head of NMIC, said:
“Cinema and culture are the soft power that unite nations. Tonight, we experienced the harmony of diversity through shared artistic expression.”
Also present were Music Director Mr. Samarang, Executive Producer Mr. Sumedh Tarde, and several cultural ambassadors and stakeholders.
The evening concluded with a traditional Argentinian culinary experience hosted by the Consulate General of Argentina, offering guests an immersive taste of Argentinian hospitality and heritage.
